Global Stats | Breast Augmentation and More

Global Stats | Breast Augmentation and More

There are many types of cosmetic surgery procedures available for all kinds of people of all ages. Women still outnumber men when it comes to having surgical treatments to enhance their best features. Plastic surgery is also turning out to be more commonplace and accepted among men too. With the low cost of travel these days, a lot of people are prepared to journey afar to get surgery done. Breast augmentation is still the most sought after procedure amongst women the world over, but it’s not only breast implants. Singapore, Thailand and a few other countries in Asia are seeing a big increase in the less invasive fat transfer procedures. Although natural breast augmentation is catching on around the world, silicone-gel and saline implants still hold the top slot.

Breast implants cost less than they used to and they’re also better quality. This helps to keep augmentation mammoplasty at the top of most women’s wish list, but it’s not the only surgery. In this piece we take a look at the growing trend of aesthetic plastic surgery around the world. At the time of writing, the statistics for 2015 are not yet public, so we’ll look at the data from 2014 to get an idea of where this trend is heading.

Global Statistics for Aesthetic Surgery

The eight countries which carried out the greatest number of non-surgical and surgical cosmetic procedures in 2014 include the following:

  • 1% – United States: 4,064,571
  • 2% – Brazil: 2,058,505
  • 2% – Japan: 1,260,351
  • 8% – South Korea: 980,313
  • 5% – Mexico: 706,072
  • 6% – Germany: 533,622
  • 1% – France: 416,148
  • 8% – Colombia – 357,115

Medical Tourism on the Rise

Note how Japan and South Korea are leading the way in the Asia region. They’ve held this position for quite some time now thanks to a large domestic clientele. With the increase in medical tourism, countries like Thailand and Singapore are starting to see a huge increase in foreign custom. For breast implants, Singapore is perhaps second only to Thailand right now. It’s certainly gaining a reputation as being the cosmetic surgery hub for South East Asia. The main reasons for this are because the surgeons in Singapore are highly trained (many in the US) and very skilled at what they do.

Singapore is also a country with an impeccable reputation for good governance. It enforces very strict laws, rules and regulations that every medical clinic adheres to. Thailand and some of the other countries in the region do not. Medical tourists find these thing’s particularly reassuring about Singapore. It is why this tiny republic is fast becoming the place to go for all kinds of surgeries, not only cosmetic.

Twenty Million Cosmetic Surgeries

Breast-Implants

Twenty million aesthetic surgical and non-surgical procedures were carried out globally in 2014. This is according to statistics published by the International Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ISAPS). There were probably many more too, when you consider how many uncertified practices there are around the world. It’s a trend that’s going up and shows no signs of slowing down. These stats only include data from countries which gave a sufficient response to the survey. They also include all surgeries performed on both men and women collectively.

Across the board, the leading surgical procedures carried out globally in 2014 are as follows:

  • Eyelid Surgery (particularly popular among Asians): 1,427,451
  • Liposuction (lipoplasty): 1,372,901
  • Breast augmentation: 1,348,197
  • Fat-grafting (fat transfer): 965,727
  • Rhinoplasty (nose jobs): 849,445

For non-surgical procedures, the data looks like this:

  • Botulinum toxin (BTX): 4,830,911
  • Hyaluronic acid (HA): 2,690,633
  • Hair removal: 1,277,581
  • Chemical peel: 493,043
  • Laser skin resurfacing: 480,271

Women make up the majority of the clientele globally. Even so, cosmetic procedures are becoming increasingly more popular with men from all countries and ethnicities. We expect to see a considerable increase in male custom in the coming years. In total, women had over 17,000,000 cosmetic procedures in 2014. That equates to about 86.3 percent of the total. Here are the surgeries performed most regularly on women (most popular at the top):

  • Breast augmentation
  • Liposuction
  • Eye-lid Surgery
  • Fat-grafting
  • Abdominoplasty

The amount of surgery performed on women is huge when compared to men. For 2014, the global stats for male clientele were just 2,500,000 procedures (13.7 percent of the total). The most frequent surgical procedures done on men might surprise you (most popular at the top):

  • Eyelid Surgery
  • Rhinoplasty
  • Liposuction
  • Gynecomastia
  • Fat-grafting

What we also know from these latest statistics is that there’s strong evidence to suggest cosmetic surgery is spreading fast and diversifying. This is thanks largely to newer techniques and changing trends in aesthetic procedures.

UK Stats in Cosmetic Surgery

The UK didn’t make it into the top eight for global stats, but surgical procedures in the kingdom are on the rise. There are also quite a few English women who travel to Singapore and Thailand to have work done each year. In general, the Brits are quite a conservative race. Despite this, they are opening up more to the idea of cosmetic procedures, both invasive and non-invasive surgeries. Boob jobs have always been, and continue to be all the rage among British women, but that’s not all. Here’s a rundown of the popular procedures carried out in the UK for 2014.

  • Breast augmentation: 11, 123
  • Eyelid surgery: 6,921
  • Face/neck lift: 6016
  • Breast reduction: 4,680
  • Rhinoplasty: 3,841
  • Liposuction: 3,772
  • Abdominoplasty: 3,345
  • Fat transfer: 3,037
  • Bow lifts: 1,962
  • Otoplasty (ear jobs): 670

In every single one of the above procedures, there was an increase on the year previous. Here is the total number of cosmetic surgeries performed for both men and women in 2014:

  • Women: 45, 365
  • Men: 4,757

Summing Up
Breast implants cost in singapore

Breast augmentation is now, and will continue to be, the most performed surgery on western women. Breast implants cost less than they ever did, and the shells are of a more superior quality compared to how they used to be. Today’s surgery is faster and recovery times are shorter. Behind breasts are the eyelifts, popular with young Asians and older Caucasians. Other, less invasive surgical procedures are on the rise. New techniques and procedures are coming out constantly. This really is an exciting time for innovations in the world of cosmetic surgery. Never before have there been so many options available to so many people. It will be interesting to see what the procedures and stats look like in five or ten years from now.
