10 May Get a Tummy Tuck
Tummy tuck surgery (abdominoplasty) is, in theory at least, a simple surgical procedure. Having said that, it’s also quite a serious operation and not something anyone should take lightly. A successful abdominoplasty will flatten your abdomen area by removing excess fat and skin. It will also go some way to tightening your muscles in the abdominal wall. You’re probably reading here because you or someone you know is considering a tummy-tuck. Singapore is becoming a popular place to have this type of surgery done, and for all the right reasons.
In recent years, my country has got itself an excellent reputation as being an ideal place for medical tourism. Many of the doctors and surgeons here have trained at the very best centres from around the globe. Singapore is certainly one of the finest medical destinations in the whole of the Asia region, if not the world. People feel confident and safe having tummy-tuck and other forms of cosmetic surgery in the republic. Every single year there are thousands of travelers from all over the world who come here for their chosen surgery. The reasons are quite obvious:
1. Benefit from low-cost surgical procedures
2. Extremely high-quality care & facilities
3. World class physicians and surgeons
Singapore offers a whole range of surgical procedures for all kinds of clients. If you are interested in any of the following medical and health needs, then make sure you put Singapore onto your shortlist of potential destinations:
- Cosmetic surgery
- Orthopedic surgeries
Who Needs a Tummy-Tuck
Having a beautiful flat stomach is not so much a need as a want, and there’s nothing wrong with that. There are all kinds of reasons why the abdomen area gets out of condition. If sit-ups, diet and regular cardiovascular exercise aren’t working, you might want to consider an abdominoplasty.
Not the Same thing as Liposuction
The tummy tuck is not the same thing as liposuction. Liposuction is a type of surgery used to take away any surplus body fat. This procedure is also known as suction-assisted lipectomy or liposculpture. Some people do choose to have liposuction as well as a tummy-tuck. Singapore surgeons are qualified and skilled at all such surgeries. Tummy tuck cost can vary of course, depending on the patient, the type of surgery used, and the amount of work that needs to be done.
You may consider a tummy-tuck operation for any of the following reasons:
- Women after several pregnancies
- People who were obese and now have surplus fat deposits and/or loose skin
Child birth can be cruel for some women insomuch that it leaves them with very lose abdominal muscles and a lot of unsightly excess skin. If you are a woman and you expect to have more children, then you will want to delay this kind of surgery until after your last child is born.
Obese people who have managed to lose lots of weight can face similar problems. Excess fat deposits and loose skin can be particularly evident if they have lost lots of weight in a relatively short space of time. If you are still trying to shed more fat, then you too will want to postpone tummy-tuck surgery until you’ve reached your target weight.
One concern a lot of people have with an abdominoplasty is the post-surgery scars. How much scarring there is depends on the individual, the condition of their skin and the skill of the surgeon. This is certainly something you will want to discuss at the consultation stage. Be sure to bring up “scar placement” and “scar length” with your doctor prior to the operation.
Types of Tummy Tuck
There are two basic types of abdominoplasty. Which one is right for you will be determined at the consultation stage as you go through your options and goals. The two types of surgery are:
1. Partial or mini abdominoplasty
2. Complete abdominoplasty
The mini- abdominoplasty: This is typically performed on patient’s whose fat deposits are set below their naval. In most cases the belly button is not moved during this procedure. How long it takes depends on a range of factors. Most partial or mini-abdominoplasties are usually completed within a couple of hours, although each case is different.
The complete abdominoplasty: This obviously requires extra work and is a bit more invasive. The surgeon has to cut you along the abdomen from one hipbone to the other. They then have to carefully shape the remaining skin, tissue and the muscle to achieve the best results. The complete abdominoplasty does involve relocating the belly button though this is not usually a problematic procedure. Some patients may also need to wear drainage tubes for a while after surgery. The surgery itself can take around five hours in some cases depending on the situation. The tummy tuck cost is not fixed for either type of surgery as it has to be worked out on a case by case basis.
How to Best Prepare for Your Abdominoplasty
There’s not a lot to do for the preparation stage, but you still need to be prepared all the same. If you happen to smoke, the doctor will more than likely ask you to quit for at least a couple of weeks prior to surgery. You will also be asked to stay stopped for another couple of weeks after the surgery. This is a serious request and needs to be taken seriously. Cutting down is not an option, and here’s why:
1. Smoking increases the chances of complications in the patient during surgery
2. Smoking slows the healing process post-surgery
You can also prepare for your surgery by eating well before the operation (don’t diet). Nourishing your body with well-balanced meals will make you stronger and heal faster.
Once you get home after the surgery, there are a few essential items you will need to have at your disposal. These include:
- Bathroom chair and a hand-held shower head
- Comfy, loose-fitting clothing (easy to put over the head type garments)
- Ice packs
- Vaseline (petroleum jelly)
If you live alone, arrange for someone to stay with you for the first night at least. If you’re a medical tourist having the surgery in Singapore, then after-surgery care and accommodation will be arranged for you as necessary.
Your surgeon should cover absolutely everything you need to know during the consultation. Even so, still make a list of your own questions or concerns before the meeting.
